Stories of Dee Why – 80 x 45 cm

$950.00

Acrylic on canvas

Dramatic ever-changing skies, the ebb & flow of the ocean, and my endless pursuit of the big blue. Sydney’s Northern Beaches offers up a stunning natural landscape that is a constant inspiration in my art. The coast is an escape from life, a chance to energise, reflect or daydream about that next painting...

Stories of Dee Why I is painted on a canvas at a ratio of 16:9. Intentionally mirroring the ratio of the portrait style stories that flood social media. Here, rather than mindlessly consuming content, the viewer is invited to stop, pause and connect with the story of the landscape.

Take time with your gaze. Lines meander and converge. Tone and colour guide the eye through the work. Layers and broad sweeping brushstrokes coexist with intuitive drawn lines and scratch marks that combine to interpret the coastline.

This seascape, is so familiar I can recall it in my mind. Sometimes questioning its hold over me. Despite this, I was genuinely suprised to recognise the distinctive headland recently in a visit The NSW Art Gallery unmistakeable in "The lonely margin of the sea" - Jessie E Scarvell, 1894.

This once lonely margin of sea is now surrounded with densely populated suburbs. Yet the headland remains stoic and relatively unchanged in over 100 years! I would not have known that story with out stumbling across the small work quite by accident. I felt a kindred spirit to this woman who was also making sense of the world around her. Whilst I am not bound by my subject matter-as it is the joy of mark-making that consumes me-I cannot deny the magnetic attraction drawing me to return to this seascape in my art again, and again.
