Oil on canvas, framed in Tasmanian Oak

Beyond The White Breakers, commenced in pure oil stick and gusto, this canvas zipped into being with energy just like the dynamic waves it was depicting. Careful consideration as the artist to lay down original expressive marks - and importantly - retain these in the finished piece.

An artist's greatest challenge is to know when a work is finished and to avoid 'fixing' things. I was thrilled with the energy of these waves and loved the process. As a confident mark-maker I work with intention - yet - also open to the intuitive forces at play, that allow me to go with the flow and see where the marks take me. The final touch was splashing whitewash and trusting the process before the artist's quality varnish to protect the work.

The title is an homage to lyrics by Colin Hay, Beautiful World.

“My, my, my it's a beautiful world.

I like swimming in the sea.

I like to go on beyond the white breakers,

where a man can still be free.

Or a woman if you are one...”
